We try to influence every time that we communicate. The notion of influencing styles alerts students to this phenomenon. In addition, it helps students to understand how human communication has become increasingly characterised in terms of styles of presenting, styles of learning, styles of managing, etc. So, this activity can sensitise students to the extent to which people approach communication in different ways.
This activity involves students in reading short descriptions of a set of influencing styles. They then identify the styles that they tend to use and the styles that they tend to respond to. They also identify styles employed by their parents.
Students are also asked to present in a way that employs at least one of the styles described, a style that they are not used to employing.
This focus on influencing styles has worked well for me with students in business and students in science as well as with professionals in middle management and in technical organisations.
